I've surprised myself by becoming well-known as a street fashion photographer. I'm surprised by this, but only because I'm not just interested in clothes as fashion accessories. Because clothes, viewed as worn cultural texts, is quite a unique phenomenon and a category deserving of special treatment, I am more interested in clothing as wearable cultural texts that are significant. Clothing is unique in that it is inherently personal in that the wearer actively chooses to take part in a semiotic conversation that is held in public and in which fashion items not only have socio-cultural significance but are also chosen as part of a statement that says something about the wearer.
The wearer chooses to combine these various objects into a larger whole, much like a speaker does when putting words that they have learned elsewhere into a sentence. On the other hand, fashion items are individual objects with multiple meanings that have been societally assigned to them, similar to words within a language. Although there are grammatical rules that regulate our sentences so that they are understandable to other language users, we are nevertheless free to express ourselves anyway we like.
We are free to bend the rules, use puns, write poetry, or even distort meaning for rhetorical effect. There are also numerous speech patterns, some of which are formal, others of which are slang-filled, and some of which even deliberately flout grammar and usage conventions in order to make a certain point. Gyu-eun, a third-year high school student who is currently finishing up her preparations for the crucial Korean college entrance exam scheduled for November 17th, caught my attention during the most recent Seoul Fashion Week (SS 2016), primarily due to the way she inverted a fundamental rule of fashion by wearing her shirt backwards. It's an unexpected decision and technically "wrong" (poor fashion grammar), but it works really well and just comes effortlessly to the point that I didn't even realise it until I had already made up my mind to start shooting her.
Their influence comes from the act of dressing up itself, from the decision to forge a new identity based on the acquisition and use of clothing, rather than from each one being the finest dressed person ever or being totally original. From this consuming culture, they've developed a brand-new category of creative consumption that allows people to express their identities through apparel in a way that is novel to Korean culture.
This is how the creative act in this Similar to a jazz artist playing in a bar in the 1930s or a rapper performing at a neighbourhood block party in the early 1980s, the paepi is distinguished by the social courage of the performance, which gives the creative act of riffing or remixing meaning.
